Japanese inspired garden

A courtyard retreat

A complete transformation of a courtyard at the rear of a heritage property in Turramurra, creating a tranquil outdoor room connected to the newly renovated kitchen and living spaces. Inspired by the simplicity and natural materials of Japanese garden design, the courtyard was designed as a place for family and friends to gather, relax and connect with the garden.

The design needed to establish a strong connection between the new interiors and the existing side passage leading to the front garden, while addressing privacy from neighbouring homes and resolving longstanding drainage issues. On the wish-list was a covered area and the sound and movement of running water to create a sense of calm and restoration.

A fishpond, waterfall and hand-selected andesite rock form the heart of the garden, with wide-board hardwood decking, granite paving and steppers creating a natural flow between the different spaces. Recycled and reclaimed materials, including tumbled post-quarry pebble and reclaimed post timbers, add texture and a sense of age appropriate to the heritage setting.

A timber gazebo with a terracotta shingle roof and raked shiplap ceiling provides a distinctive architectural element within the garden, providing space to cook and entertain. Built-in seating, copper lighting and layered planting, complete the scheme.
