All the external areas of this lovely free-standing federation-style home in Summer Hill needed a full make-over. CALDESIGN prepared concept plans, a development application (due to the Heritage zoning) and construction documents for the enthusiastic owner wanting to spend plenty of time in her new garden.
There were three distinct garden zones with equally distinct characters - the small front entry garden, the shaded side driveway area and carport, and the large sunny backyard. A large Box Elder dominated the front and this, along with the lawn, was removed and replaced with smaller-growing Crepe Myrtle, Magnolia and Camellia trees underplanted with massed cottage style shrubs, hedges, perennials and ground-covers. Feature pots, a teak bench, custom handrail, garden lighting and new curved sandstone path were also incorporated in to the front 'show garden'.
The little-used concrete driveway and chain-mesh gate were removed and replaced with large-format sandstone steppers, Mondo grass strips, decorative gravel and new gated screens in Western Red Cedar. A screened bin store was also built in to a nook created in the driveway garden. A much-loved mature Frangipani, climbing rose and overgrown Lilly Pilly trees were carefully pruned off gutters and retained.
The backyard was divided up in to five distinct zones with each zone designed for a specific purpose or sequence of related purposes. These were:
the central walkway, which led to - the Citrus garden, an upper lawn terrace and the main entertaining terrace, both of which led to the rear utility strip with garden shed, drying court, composting bay and worm farm - all hidden from view behind a hardwood screen.
The rear garden features a built-in travertine bench-top with gas BBQ, custom stone and steel water feature, built-in hardwood benches, garden mirrors, corten planter, bronze LED garden lights and large steel pergola.
